FULL NAME: Marisa Kearne
NICKNAME(S): Isa (only by those who are really close; given by a very close friend who passed away in childhood), Mars (she can be tough and mean like the god in Roman myths; given by a childhood friend), Night, Shadow, Dusk (nicknames she gave herself after learning about her powers)
SPECIES: Mutant
CODE NAME: N/A now (if you have suggestions, PM me please)
AGE: 23
SEXUALITY: Straight
DATE OF BIRTH: February 22, 1991
CANON OR ORIGINAL: Original
MEMBER GROUP: Originally part of the Hellfire Club, but left and is currently in the Brotherhood
POWER(S): Marisa’s mutation is Darkness Manipulation. It is the power to manipulate darkness/shadows. Darkness Manipulation is also called Darkness Control, Erebokinesis, Obtenebration, Umbrakinesis, Umbragenesis, and Shadow Manipulation. Marisa’s mutation allows her to create, shape and manipulate darkness and shadows. By itself, darkness is mostly used to cloud everything into total darkness, but by accessing a dimension of dark energy it can be channeled to a variety of effects, both as an absence of light and a solid substance: one can also control and manipulate the beings that exist there, create and dispel shields and areas of total darkness, create constructs and weapons, teleport one's self through massive distances via shadows, etc. The opposite of this mutation is Light Manipulation, the power to manipulate light.
One of Marisa’s abilities is Flight. With this, Marisa has the power to fly without any outside influence. Flight is basically the power to fly or otherwise move through the air using varying methods. Some possibilities include using one or more forms of energy, wings or similar structures, or even mimicking or becoming an animal that can fly. Some users are generally able to Levitate, and Glide as well.
Marisa has two methods to achieve Flight. One of Marisa’s flight methods is Elemental Flight, the power to fly by using elements. Users of this ability can fly, glide and/or levitate through manipulation of different types of elements and energies. She can fly at varying speeds, levitate, or propel herself without taking flight, including enhanced jumping by a short burst of flight. Marisa uses this technique with a Darkness Attack called Hand Blasts or Dark Beam Emission to help her into the air and fly. Her second method of flight is Energy Propulsion, the power to use energy to propel oneself to fly. Marisa can use her Darkness energy to fly, by emitting a burst of energy into the ground that sends her flying into the air, she can also do this by producing an aura of the energy which would levitate them, or a beam of the energy to the ground, but it can also be wings, producing wings from ambient energy.
Marisa is also able to use an ability called Darkness Attacks. It is the ability to release/use darkness/shadow to use various attacks. Darkness Attacks can also be called Darkness/Shadow Projection, Shadow Attacks, and Umbrakinetic Attacks. This ability allows Marisa to release/use darkness/shadow to attack in various shapes and/or intensities, which are either projected, used as a part of melee attacks, or other things.
Another ability Marisa can use is called Solidification, the power to solidify objects/organisms into a solid form, via controlling darkness/shadows. Solidification is also called Hardening, Solidify, and Stiffening. Marisa can solidify, or give solid-like properties, to darkness and shadows. She can achieve Solidification of darkness by causing the loose molecules to come together, with the level of solidity going from loose jello to metal-like hardness or beyond. The opposite of this ability is called Melting.
Finally, Marisa’s final ability is Umbrakinetic Combat, the power to fuse darkness and physical combat. Umbrakinetic Combat is also called Darkness Combat, Shadow Combat, Umbrageous Combat, Umbrakinetic Martial Arts, and Yamijutsu. With this ability, Marisa can fuse her manipulation of darkness with physical combat to create devastating martial arts. She can use both direct and indirect attacks, utilizing every patch of darkness or shadow available or create tools and weapons as needed. The opposite of this ability is called Photokinetic Combat.
WEAKNESS(S): Marisa’s mutation is too weak to do any real damage to anyone, herself included. For that reason, Marisa wears a gem that amplifies her mutation. During the course of using the source, Marisa’s mutant power increases to the point she will no longer need her source. On the other hand, as her mutant power grows stronger, so does the damage it can do to her body. To clarify, her darkness powers can cause her to go blind, either temporarily or permanently, damage her skin and causing it to turn black, cause her to become a Nyctophobic, a person with a severe fear of the dark which in turn makes her less likely to use her mutant powers, and could possibly cease to exist, being swallowed up by the very darkness her mutation consists of.
Marisa’s mutation is Darkness Manipulation and yet she may be unable to create darkness and/or shadows, be limited to manipulating only from already existing sources, may have to be in sync with darkness, whether her own or the source of her power, and may become affected/corrupted through extended exposure. Mutations such as Light Manipulation and Light Generation are especially effective against this mutation. However it should be noted that darkness can overpower light as well.
Marisa’s ability of Flight may require air or atmosphere to maintain lift, may require apparatus to control direction and altitude, may be limited to a particular length of time she are able to spend flying, may be limited in speed or acceleration, and may suffer from altitude sickness if not careful, unless she has the adapting skills to the changes to altitudes (otherwise known as Atmospheric Adaptation). Unless Marisa has Vacuum Adaptation, the power to survive in the vacuum of space unaided, they usually can't go beyond the borders of a planet, like Earth.
Darkness Attacks are useless against opponents with Umbrakinetic Immunity, the ability to be immune to darkness-based attacks. Marisa may not be immune to effects of her own blasts and firing may be an involuntary reaction, or released in constant stream. Marisa will be exhausted when too much energy is used. She may also be over-charged or wounded if too much energy is used at once. Marisa will need control to avoid unnecessary destruction.
When using Solidification, the change is usually temporary and short-lived, and may be unable to revert back to the darkness or shadows if melted to original form. Marisa may also need to be in physical contact with a gas or liquid form and she may not be able to use ability on certain materials.
Umbrakinetic Combat is weak against Light Manipulation and may be outdone by any other mutant of a power that creates light (e.g. Fire Manipulation, the power to manipulate fire, Energy Constructs, etc.). If Marisa cannot create darkness they will have to use ambient darkness.

PERSONALITY: During childhood, Marisa Kearne was a carefree girl. She often got into trouble without meaning to and was friendly with everyone. She enjoyed reading, writing, sketching, and playing with her best friend Tyrone Truman, a boy with black hair and dark eyes. Tyrone was her shoulder to cry on. He was always there when he needed her and they always talked. With him, she was an adventurous girl who wanted to explore any place she could imagine or was curious about. Marisa was also a creative girl and was never constant in her imagination. She was considerate of how others felt, often wanting to help whoever was in need. She was never violent and was respectful to her elders.
However, when Tyrone died, she blamed herself and shut everyone off. She went from an extrovert to an introvert in an instant and carries the guilt of Tyrone’s death everywhere. Her personality flipped, becoming negative and darker.
She felt so much grief; Marisa became someone who was the opposite of who she once was. She became cold, cruel, hateful, grim, tense, and uncaring. She began to wear black to show her depression and guilt to the world. It was also a way to better connect with her dark powers. Marisa observes instead of interacts, often staying in the back of a room undetected.
Since she has become more negative and hateful toward herself, it is easy to hurt her feelings at times by reminding her of her friend’s death or by saying she is heartless. Another flaw would be that she is insecure about what she is, often fearing for her life when humans would throw things at her because of what she was. Marisa often questions herself and her decisions, particularly the decision she made in the past that she can’t change now.
HISTORY: Rosa and William Kearne were humans and the parents of Marisa Shade Kearne. They were wealthy and owned a mansion in the mountains. The mutation had skipped their generation entirely, so neither Rosa nor William knew of the possibilities of any of their children being a mutant.
Marisa was born on a dark night in the middle of the Appalachian Mountains on February 22, 1991. There was no sign of light in the sky or in the house. It seemed like an omen, signaling bad fortune for the child. Her parents thought it was a coincidence, unaware of their daughter’s mutation.
Marisa became aware of her mutation by the age of five. She was alone in her room late at night. She had just woken up from a terrifying nightmare and woke up in time to see shadows leaving her left arm, leaving cuts and blood oozing down her skin. Too afraid to tell anyone, she kept it a secret from everyone, especially her best friend Tyrone Truman, a boy with black hair and dark eyes who was silent yet fun to hang out with.
Marisa and Tyrone had been friends since age four. They automatically became friends, like a switch had been set off and they became thick as thieves. They always played together. It didn’t matter if it was bad weather or good, they always found ways to make the day fun. They often cosplayed, pretending to be their favorite anime characters in a fantasy story they made up. They comforted each other when they were upset, talked about their problems with one another, and told each other their secrets (except for Marisa being a mutant).
One day, when they were six, they promised to always protect each other and stay with each other for their entire lives. In honor of this promise, they exchanged gifts. Marisa gave Tyrone a black bracelet which he always wore on his right wrist. Tyrone gave Marisa a black ribbon choker that had a little black gem dangling on it. Unknown to them both, this would become the source of Marisa’s weak mutant powers.
However, on a dark and cold night in December, the friendship Marisa and Tyrone held so dear was fated to come to an end. The two were nine years old, and though they only knew each other for a few years, it looked like they had been friends for centuries. They were playing near a frozen looking river late at night. Tyrone was chasing Marisa, trying to catch her as they played a game of tag, when he slipped on a rock and fell through the ice and in the freezing water. Marise tried to save him. In her panicked state, her negative emotions powered her mutant abilities and created a creature that reached out to help save her beloved friend as he desperately tried to crawl out of the water by clawing into the ice with his frostbitten fingers. Tyrone saw the shadowy creature and was terrified. He let go of what little grip he had on the ice and slipped into the water. The current then carried him away down the stream, too fast for Marisa to save him.
A couple of months passed before Tyrone’s body appeared once again. The ice had melted from the coming spring to reveal his remains near the bank of the river a few miles down from where he fell in. As a result of her friend’s death, Marisa blamed herself for not saving him. Her abilities caused him to die because he was afraid of them. From then on, she was no longer the girl she used to be.
Years passed and Marisa stayed in a deep state of depression. During her depression, she decided to get tattoos from a series she read called the Mortal Instruments. Each tattoo represented what she believed in or serves as a reminder of her past. In addition to getting the Shadowhunter Runes tattooed onto her skin,
By age 18, she joined the Hellfire Club, a group created by Sebastian Shaw. Most of its members were wealthy, famous, or influential members of society. Marisa got in because of her wealth that was given to her by her parents. In time, she eventually left, believing that the Hellfire Club was not what she thought it was. She was a member of the Hellfire Club for two years. After a year of leaving the Hellfire Club, she joined Magneto’s Brotherhood.
She then recently visited a café where she saw a human by the name of Lancelot Kaiser. She often observed him while remaining distant. The more she went, the more she realized how her heart reacted differently around him.
Marisa now enjoys her life in the Brotherhood, after being in the Brotherhood for about three years, and keeps her feelings hidden from others. She doesn’t want anyone to know that she has fallen in love with a human and fears what Lancelot Kaiser will say/do when or if he founds out the truth about her being a Mutant.
CRUSH/LOVER: Lancelot Kaiser
ALIGNMENT: Evil mostly, but can be Neutral
OVERALL APPEARANCE: Marisa Kearne is a medium sized woman, about 5’6’’, with long black hair that reminds people of night and dark colored eyes so close to black they resemble bottomless pits. She is average in weight, 125 lbs, and is fit yet still maintains a slightly skinny build. Her skin is slightly pale but looks healthy. Her eyes are normal (if there is anything that can be considered normal) and her lips are slender yet full.
On her left arm, there are scars from when her Darkness Manipulation went out of control. It happened during her sleep as a child, often when she had nightmares about her friend’s death. Her power would make wires made of shadow wrap around her arm and cut into her skin. She would wake up with her arm bleeding, and as a result, carries the marks to this day.
Marisa’s upper back and shoulders has tattoos of things her powers remind her of or things that she has nightmares about.
On her right arm, Marisa has tattoos of Shadowhunter Runes or Marks that are in The Mortal Instrument series, a series Marisa use to read. The marks are Deflect/Block, Destruction, Equilibrium, Friendship/Combine, Persevere, Stealth, Power, Promise, Quietude, and Understanding. Each mark stands for something that she believes in.
~Meanings of Tattoos~
Normal Tattoos
*Skull- This is supposed to represent the skull of her deceased friend, Tyrone. The skull has water coming out of its eye sockets as if it is crying when it is really the water from the river he fell into. Sitting on the skull is a crown which shows the meaning of Tyrone’s name: king. This tattoo is located at the base of her neck.
*Broken Glass- This represents her fear of being broken by her own mutation. It also shows how shattered her emotions are even when she doesn’t show them. This tattoo is located across her back, going shoulder to shoulder.
*χαμένος- This is the Greek word meaning “lost”. It is a word she often uses to describe herself when she uses her mutant power. This tattoo is located under the skull
Shadowhunter Tattoos
*Deflect/Block- to bend or turn aside; turn from a true course or straight line; swerve/to obstruct (someone or something) by placing obstacles in the way
This is important to Marisa since she “turned aside” from her past and “places obstacles” in the way of her painful memories to make sure they do not interfere with her life now or in the future. She often places barriers in her mind around sensitive thoughts or memories, keeping them contained so they do not show to others.
*Destruction- the act of destroying or state of being destroyed; demolition
This serves as a reminder that she could destroy herself if she is not careful with her mutant powers. She lives in fear every day and constantly has nightmares about exceeding her limit. Though not often religious, she’ll pray that she will not be destroyed by her own powers.
*Equilibrium- equal balance between any powers, influences, etc.; equality of effect; mental or emotional balance; equanimity
She has a strong sense of balance, not wanting to disrupt it. She tries to balance her physical strength and her power so that she can’t be destroyed. This tattoo is often tied with Destruction to Marisa as she struggles to find ways to not die or damage her body.
*Friendship/Combine- a person attached to another by feelings of affection or personal regard, a person who gives assistance; patron; supporter, a person who is on good terms with another; a person who is not hostile/to unite for a common purpose; join forces
When Marisa was little, she had a friend named Tyrone. They supported one another and always played together. They often thought alike. She has this tattoo to remember him by.
*Persevere- to persist in anything undertaken; maintain a purpose in spite of difficulty, obstacles, or discouragement; continue steadfastly
Marisa has a habit of not giving up. She always keeps a purpose about why she does what she does and it never changes.
*Stealth- secret, clandestine, or surreptitious procedure
Her powers, especially when using the source, are important to this tattoo. Also, when she was growing up, she always kept secrets from people.
*Power- ability to do or act; capability of doing or accomplishing something
This tattoo serves as a reminder to Marisa that everyone has power. Some may not be a mutant and have special abilities, but they still have the ability to act and do something.
*Promise- an express assurance on which expectation is to be based on something that has the effect of an express assurance; indication of what may be expected.
This tattoo reminds Marisa that promises are important and that she should always try to keep them. The reason why she has this tattoo is out of guilt because of the promise she made to her close friend. If she had kept that promise, he would still be alive to this day and Marisa wouldn’t have nightmares about her friend’s death.
*Quietude- restrained in speech, manner, etc.; saying little
Because of the things she has witnessed in her life, she has taken an oath of silence as it were. This tattoo symbolizes her oath shows the reason why she doesn’t talk much or express her emotions clearly.
*Understanding- to grasp the significance, implications, or importance of
This tattoo symbolizes her difficulty to understand others. She doesn’t understand how people act or why some choose to fight on the side of good or evil. However, she now tries to understand and get clarification on things she does not know.
~End of Tattoo Meanings~
Marisa enjoys wearing the color black and is hardly seen in any other color. To her, black is the color of mystery, a word she likes to use to describe her even if it doesn’t seem to fit at times. Also, she hardly wears dresses or anything that will expose her arms. She does not like to show off her tattoos and always tries to conceal them, not wanting others to stare at her. Around her neck, she wears a choker with a black gem, a gift from her deceased friend and the source of her Darkness Manipulation powers (until she can get past that). Marisa is often confused with being Goth but doesn’t view herself as such. Any make-up she wears is dark.
ANYTHING ELSE: Marisa Kearne carries around a katana on her back. She hardly uses it so most think it's for decoration only or just some lousy costume piece. She polishes it daily and keeps it sharpened for emergency uses (like when her source of power breaks).
